Charter School Students Could Soon Participate in Public School Activities
None by Eric Ray
Students attending charter schools or getting their education through an online program may soon be eligible to play on the basketball or football team at a public school.First Substitute House Bill 36 makes charter school students eligible for extracurricular activities at a public school located in their neighborhoods. These students may only participate in activities not offered by their charter school.
Republican Senator Mark Madsen, sponsor of the measure, says many students are forced to choose between a strong academic experience and an athletic program that might help them with college scholarships. He adds the bill has the support of the Utah High School Activities Association. The Senate will hear the measure one more time before it can possibly go to the House.
