House Calls for Schools to Close on Veterans Day

Feb 08, 2008 by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Veterans Day might soon join the list of holidays when Utah's public schools are closed. Republican Representative Carl Wimmer of Salt Lake County is sponsoring a resolution urging the State School Board to adjust its schedule to allow students to celebrate the nation's veterans.

The measure generated great debate on the House floor today. Republican Representative Ken Sumsion of Lehi says the resolution makes the statement to Utah's students that Veterans Day is not an ordinary day. However, Republican Representative Paul Neuenschwander of Davis and Salt Lake Counties says keeping kids in school is the best way to celebrate freedom because education is the best freedom.

House Joint Resolution 4 passed the House by a vote of 41 to 29 and will be considered by the Senate.
