Lawmakers May Outlaw Internet Hunting
Feb 11, 2008 by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) Hunters hoping to harvest a trophy deer or elk at the click of a mouse might soon be out of luck. A House committee today, with the support of the Division of Wildlife Resources, unanimously passed a measure outlawing the practice of computer assisted remote hunting. The practice allows a person to hunt an animal using a webcam and a mouse-operated gun.Senator Michael Waddoups of Salt Lake County, sponsor of Senate Bill 164, calls the practice "unsportsmanlike." For a short time, computer assisted hunting existed in Texas. That state has since banned the practice, along with 34 other states.
The measure passed the House Judiciary Committee unanimously and goes to the full House for consideration. The measure has already passed the Senate.
