$35 Million Funding Request Denied
(KCPW News) Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon says "No" to ReAL Salt Lake. He says the soccer team's 35-million dollar request for county funds to help build a soccer stadium in Sandy is financially unwise.ReAL Salt Lake wants the county to bond for the money. But the problem, says Corroon, is that with interest, Salt Lake County will end up paying 87-point-five million dollars over the life of the loan. Corroon says he's not opposed to ReAL building the stadium in Sandy. Nor does he object to using public money to help fund the project. But, he says the county simply doesn't have the money and ReAL is asking for too much.
Corroon says his decision is unrelated to recent tensions with the team over the leak of its financial statements to the media. He adds that one possibility for funding the stadium is to put it to voters as a general obligation bond on the November ballot. ReAL Salt Lake has not returned calls for comment on alternative funding possibilities.
