Bennett to Utah Lawmakers: Congress Unlikely to Act on Immigration

Feb 19, 2008 by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Utah Republican Senator Bob Bennett told lawmakers on Capitol Hill today not to expect any federal action on immigration for at least five years. He adds Congress will continue to appropriate money to train border patrol agents and build a border wall.

Bennett says it's unlikely Congress will take up the issue this year because it's an election year. He reasons politicians have lost elections based on their immigration stance, no matter what side of the fence their opinion fell on. He adds it may be up to the new President and Congress to take up the matter.

Bennett also spoke to lawmakers about federal action on healthcare. Bennett's complete address to the Utah Senate is available here.
