Corroon Launches Re-Election Campaign

Feb 29, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

It's official: Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon has launched his campaign for re-election. Speaking to a crowd of a few hundred at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City, Corroon addressed his accomplishments from this term and his plans for next term.

"We will use planning, and not politics, when it comes to quality government," he said. "Our government, over the past three years, has won awards for budgeting and maintaining our AAA bond rating, which few governments receive. And we have not raised overall property taxes."

The mayor also addressed preserving open space, creating more parks, adding more sheriff's deputies, and expanding economic growth, including the expansion of the Salt Palace.

Mayor Corroon says addressing Salt Lake County's growth is going to be a key issue if he is elected to another term.

"We're gonna have to build new libraries, new parks, new senior centers. We have $85 million of recreation projects that we're working on right now," said Corroon. "I'd love to see those projects through and also look at other issues like our air quality and how we can improve our air quality and water quality in Salt Lake County."

In an interview, Corroon said he plans to serve only one more term if re-elected.
