Guadalupe Schools Worried About Immigration Reform

Mar 07, 2008 by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Officials from Salt Lake City's Guadalupe Schools are worried that sweeping immigration reform by the Utah Legislature could negatively impact the school's adult educational and literacy programs.

Salt Lake City's Guadalupe Schools is best known as a charter elementary school, however the school also provides programs for non-English speaking adults to learn English. Kate Diggins, Director of Adult Education, says Senate Bill 81 could force them to begin verifying the residency status of its students. She says she is inquiring into that possibility with the state Office of Education. She is also concerned about language in the bill that issues control of federal funding, an issue that has the school consulting legal counsel.
