Legislature Increases Motion Picture Incentive Fund
Mar 11, 2008 by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) Utah lawmakers have decided to up the ante in their efforts to bring major movie productions to the state. This session, the legislature appropriated a total of $5.5 million dollars, a $1.5 million increase, to the Motion Picture Incentive Fund.Marshall Moore, Director of the Utah Film Commission, says the $4 million appropriated last year brought a return of $43 million in production revenue to the state. In order to stay competitive with other states offering post-production rebates, Utah raised the incentive rate from 10% of production dollars spent in the state to 15%.
Film productions must spend a minimum of $1 million to qualify for a rebate, which are capped at $500,000. 2009 will be the fund's fifth year of operation.
