SLCPD Bloodhound Loses Fight with Cancer

JJ, Officer Serio Take Down 300 Suspects in Nine Years

J.J., the Salt Lake City Police Department's first bloodhound, has lost his fight with cancer:

That's Officer Mike Serio, J.J.'s handler and owner, who stopped by KCPW's Midday Metro with the bloodhound last August. At the time, J.J. was responding well to treatment for a malignant melanoma in his mouth. And Seerio says J.J.'s police work was part of his treatment:

J.J.'s condition took a turn for the worse last week and he passed away in the early morning hours last Thursday. J.J. and Officer Serio are responsible for the apprehension of close to 300 wanted people during J.J.'s almost nine years of service to the Police Department.

Use the media player below to listen to an August 30, 2007, Midday Metro interview with J.J., Officer Serio and Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank.
