Lawmakers Slated to Study Some Controversial Issues This Summer

Mar 18, 2008 by Elizabeth Ziegler

(KCPW News) Over the next several months, Legislative interim committees will tackle issues near and dear to lawmakers' hearts. This year's Master Study List includes 235 issues. Senate Majority Leader Curtis Bramble says some of them could wind up being the first bills on the boards next session.

"Before we even had our first committee meetings during the session, there were a number of bills that went straight to the board. Those were interim committee bills. If there was an item that had unanimous support in interim committee. It went straight to the board during the session," Bramble says.

It's a process that can set the next session's agenda long before opening day in January 2009. Some of the usual suspects include class-size reduction, cutting the sales tax on food, and health-system reform. One that may draw controversy includes studying whether welfare recipients should be required to submit to random drug tests. A link to the master list of interim study is available here.
