Mayor Says There's Plenty to Be Done
(KCPW News) Utah Representative David Litvack is the new director of Salt Lake County's Criminal Justice Advisory Council. He'll be in charge of working with law enforcement and jail officers to improve the county's criminal justice system. According to county mayor Peter Corroon, he'll have plenty of things to work on."We have 80 percent of our people in jail who have mental health and substance abuse issues," he said. "We need to figure out how to deal with those issues, so we don't see them coming back in jail. We have overcrowding in our jail system, so we need to figure out how we can best relieve that. We need to figure out how we can work with our court system to divert people from jail. We just need to have an overall coordinated system that makes sense for Salt Lake County and for the state of Utah."
Representative Litvack is running for his fifth term as a lawmaker. This year, he sponsored a bill to allow victims in dating relationships to get restraining orders against their abusers. It was shot down in the House by a five-vote margin.

Litvack sponsored a dating violence bill that would have feather-bedded the new bureaucracy he directs, but was voted down by the state legislature.
The voters who live in his district should consider replacing him with a representative who will serve as a government watchdog, not a fox in the henhouse.
