Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news
Senator Bob Bennett introduced last week a revised version of his Washington County public lands bill which he says strikes a balance between conservation and growth. When originally introduced in 2006, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, other green groups, some businesses and the Outdoor Industry Association, said the legislation would forever harm Utah wilderness and open the door to the sell-off of our public lands. But the bill has been revised. Here to give us his analysis of the 2008 version is SUWA’s Executive Director, Scott Groene.
Nearly 120,000 nursing positions are unfilled in hospitals, and it is estimated that by 2020, the U.S. will be short one million nurses if something isn’t done to solve this crisis now. That’s according to Suzanne Gordon, co-author of the new book titled Safety in Numbers: Nurse-to-Patient Ratios and the Future of Health Care. In it, the authors examine the arguments for and against nurse-to-patient ratios, and the cost, benefits and effectiveness of ratios in California and Victoria, Australia, the two places where R.N. staffing levels have been mandated the longest. Suzanne Gordon is an award-winning writer, and an adjunct professor in the Schools of Nursing at the University of Maryland and the University of California, San Francisco. Her books also include Life Support, Complexities of Care, and Nursing Against the Odds.
