Charter School Board Votes to Add Seven Schools, 7200 Students
Apr 22, 2008 by Jeff Robinson
Still Needs Ed. Board Approval
(KCPW News) The Utah State Charter School Board is hoping seven new charter schools will open in Utah for the fall of 2009. The board wants to add nearly 5,000 students in those schools, and another 2,400 in existing charter schools, for more than 7,000 new students altogether. It would be more, but new charter school enrollment is capped at 1.4 percent of the previous year's public school enrollment under legislation passed this year. But the 2009 enrollment cap is higher than the previous cap of 5,000 students, which applies to the 2008 school year.
One of the proposed schools is a satellite of the American Preparatory Academy that would be in South Salt Lake and serve refugees.
The board's recommendations have to be approved by the State Board of Education in May.
