Salt Lake County Democratic Convention is Tomorrow

Apr 25, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) This weekend, between 700 and 800 Democratic delegates in Salt Lake County will meet at Jordan High School to pick their nominees for state offices this year. Five House seats and two Senate seats have more than one candidate hoping to gain the nomination. Those candidates will have to get at least sixty percent of the delegates in their district to vote for them.

House District 22 on the west side of the county has three candidates running. If no candidate gets sixty percent of the vote on the first ballot, there's a second round of voting before it goes to a primary election.

The party believes it is in a good position this year and expecting voters to switch over from the Republican side.

Registration opens at 1 p.m, and issue caucuses will meet at 1:30. This weekend, delegates will also select a replacement for former party chairman Christian Burridge, who resigned last week. Vice-Chairman Weston Clark has filed as a candidate for that position. The party is also holding a spaghetti dinner tonight at the Teamsters Union Hall.
