Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news

Quin Hillyer has a suggestion for how Senator John McCain's vice presidential running mate should be both chosen and introduced to the public. The process should involve secretly-held focus groups, and the development of a powerful narrative to introduce his choice. Quin Hillyer is an associate editor at the Washington Examiner and a senior editor of The American Spectator.

A top U.N. food official told The Washington Post this week that "more than 100 million people are being driven deeper into poverty by a 'silent tsunami' of sharply rising food prices, which have sparked riots around the world and threaten U.N.-backed feeding programs for 20 million children." Rachel Smolker says that the massive diversion of crops and land to producing biofuel crops instead of food is a major factor in the very dramatic food price increases. Rachel Smolker is a research biologist at the Global Justice Ecology Project, a Vermont-based non-profit which builds alliances to address the common root causes of social injustice, economic domination and environmental destruction.
