Democratic Incumbent Challenged in Senate District One

Delegates to Vote This Weekend
(KCPW News) Tomorrow, more than 90 delegates in Salt Lake County will decide who should represent them in Senate District One: challenger Luz Robles or incumbent Fred Fife. This past session, Fife co-sponsored a resolution promoting mobile homes as affordable housing, something he says is very important to the district."There are a number of mobile home parks that are being looked at for conversion to condominium projects and other commercial uses," said the senator. "This puts several hundred people without a home site, and it's very costly to relocate the mobile home, and then there's hardly any places where they can relocate them to."
The senator also helped appropriate $30,000 dollars for the VA to inform veterans of benefits available to them, and plans to do it again if re-elected. He also hopes to appropriate state money for Head Start. Fife expects it will be a challenging convention for him tomorrow.
That challenge is coming from Luz Robles, the Director of Zion's Bank Business Resource Center, who feels that Fife has not been pro-active enough representing the district. Her top priorities are health care, the environment, and education.
"We continue to have the record of spending less money and investing less money in our students in the entire nation," she said. "I want to make sure we're working on adequately funding our public schools."
Robles has been meeting with delegates and feels very good about her chances tomorrow. She sits on the board of the Utah Health Policy Project.
