Salt Lake County Republican Convention is Tomorrow

May 02, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

More than 1,500 Delegates Expected to Attend

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake County Republican Party is expecting more than 1,500 delegates to attend its convention this Saturday at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy. Party Chairman James Evans says groups with all different viewpoints have been welcomed to set up booths.

"We welcome the Minutemen at our convention, just like we welcome Planned Parenthood at our convention," said Evans. "The UEA will be there, just like the pro-voucher forces. Everyone is welcome at our convention to express their points of view, and the delegates are the ones that make the final decision. We don't limit debate; we encourage debate and discussion."

Delegates will decide nine contested races in the Utah House and two in the Senate. Evans says he's excited about the party gaining a seat in House District 28, which is currently occupied by Democrat Roz Mcgee, who is retiring.

The chairman says the party is also not only optimistic about maintaining its five seats on the county council but also gaining Randy Horiuchi's seat.

"Our focus is in picking up an additional seat. We feel very good about keeping the five seats, and we're very optimistic about picking up a sixth seat," said Evans.

The convention begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while elections begin at 11. The state Republican party meets at UVSC next Saturday, May 10th.
