Not Just Huntsman in Race for Governor

May 09, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) Governor Jon Huntsman may enjoy high approval ratings, but he won't be the only candidate on the ballot this November. This weekend, delegates to the state Democratic Party convention could choose Bonneville Research founder Bob Springmeyer to be his opponent. Springmeyer says he'd be the underdog against Huntsman, but the race is winnable.

"I'm a competitive person," said Springmeyer. "I'm the guy that slides head-first down a bobsled track on a little skeleton sled. I drive bobsled. I'm a guy who loves skiing deep powder at Snowbird and grew up at Alta."

Springmeyer was recruited by the Democratic party to run against the governor, but he will face two challengers for the nomination at convention this weekend.

And believe it or not, Governor Huntsman himself is being challenged at the Republican convention on Saturday. Retired building contractor Chuck Smith says there are delegates out there who plan to vote for him.

"They like my ideas, they're looking for change, and I think if Governor Huntsman was not running for governor and he and I were to sit down, I think he would agree with what my ideas are," said Smith.

The candidate advocates eliminating both state and federal income tax to reduce the size of government.
