Operation Keep in Touch Bringing Webcams to Libraries for Military Families

May 09, 2008 by Elizabeth Ziegler

(KCPW News) Operation Keep In Touch is bringing webcams to 40 libraries throughout Utah, just in time for Mother's Day. Military families can use the internet video equipment to visit in real-time with loved ones serving oversees.

The Salt Lake City Library has received the equipment and is in the process of setting it up. Anyone who wants to use it can inquire at the libraries and a staff member will help set it up, says Library Director Beth Elder. This will make it easier for families to stay connected to their loved ones, she says. Some families will go to great lengths to access such equipment. Cedar City residents Doug and Shannon Shakespeare drove to Salt Lake City Friday to see their son, specialist Colton Shakespeare, over a webcam set up in the Capital Rotunda. Shannon says it was the best Mother's Day present anybody could ever have.

A handful of other National Guardsmen with the 116th Convoy Security Company on extended tour in Iraq enjoyed quality webcam time with their families - and Governor Jon Huntsman, Congressman Jim Matheson and Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.
