Shurtleff Says Utah Won't Raid Polygamous Communities

(KCPW News) Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has been supportive of Texas law enforcement's raid on a polygamous ranch in that state. However, Shurtleff says a similar raid in Utah is unrealistic."First of all, the size of the Texas government is huge compared to Utah's, and they are overwhelmed in their system with 400 kids. We have thousands, if not 10,000, kids in this state. They would overrun our system in a heartbeat. There's no way we have the resources available to put all of their parents in prison and then thousands of kids into our welfare system," says Shurtleff.
Instead, Shurtleff says when it comes to polygamous communities his office will focus on more serious crimes against women and children. Shurtleff adds that Utah already put the person most responsible for these crimes in Utah, FLDS leader Warren Jeffs, in prison. In addition, Shurtleff says FLDS members moved to Texas because of Utah's crackdown on child-bride marriages.
