Salt Lake County GOP Chairman to File IRS Complaint Against NAACP

May 15, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) Tomorrow, Salt Lake County Republican Party Chairman James Evans plans to mail a complaint to the IRS, alleging that the Salt Lake City branch of the NAACP has violated its tax-exempt status. Evans says local branch president Jeanetta Williams violated IRS regulations by pledging to campaign against Utah Senator Chris Buttars.

"You cannot be involved in political activities endorsing or opposing, or sending out messages against political candidates, and this is what the Salt Lake chapter of the NAACP has done against Senator Buttars," said Evans.

Evans plans to attach several Deseret News articles to his complaint, one which quotes Williams as saying "We'll be campaigning against Buttars for sure."

Williams maintains that the NAACP's focus is on the issues, not on targeting individual candidates in a partisan manner.

"We seek people that support the work of civil rights organizations like the NAACP, and we can do that. That's what has been said and that's what we will do," said Williams.

The NAACP was investigated by the IRS on a national level in 2004 after Chairman Julian Bond criticized President Bush. The agency concluded that the NAACP did not violate its tax-exempt status.

The NAACP targets individuals. I'm tired of Ms WIlliams lying to the public. She's been doing it for years.

When did the NAACP take ownership of the word "black"? Does this mean I can no longer refer to my car of color as "a pile of black junk" without being racist? Anyone who heard Buttars' comment understood the context in which he spoke and the meaning of the word "black." The NAACP is getting a little too full of themselves. :-(
