South Jordan City Council to Hear Results of UDOT East-West Transit Study

Jun 03, 2008 by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) City councils across the valley will soon hear recommendations from the Utah Department of Transportation on how to improve East-West mobility in light of the valley's expected population boom. The recommendations are the result of a study commissioned by Utah lawmakers in 2007.

We found out that congestion will get a little bit worse in the future and we developed a few options to accommodate that," says Project Manager Brandon Weston. "We are looking at some larger things, like [State Road] 201 for example, which is a major East-West facility. We have some widening for that. There's some smaller roadway improvements like adding lanes to 114th South."

Weston says UDOT has come up with 20 recommendations as a result of the study. Lawmakers appropriated $3.5 million for this and other transportation studies. Weston is quick to point out that this is a feasibility study and UDOT is simply making recommendations, however...

"This is a little speculation on my part, but the cities and the legislature might find something that we've put forward, something that they'd like to pursue further. So really that's to be seen," says Weston. "I wouldn't be surprised if something that they saw on our list of options didn't make sense to them and eventually made it into the long range plan."

The South Jordan City Council will be the first to hear the plan at their meeting tonight, 6pm, in the City Council Chambers, 1600 West Towne Center Drive. Click here to view more information about the study.
