SLC Nearing Environmental Promise

New Data Shows Goal in Site
(KCPW News) New data shows Salt Lake City has nearly completed its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 21 percent. Lisa Romney, environmental advisor to Mayor Rocky Anderson, says new numbers show the city's conservation efforts have virtually reached that goal - and with no fiscal impact on taxpayers.
To create a baseline for evaluation, Salt Lake City reviewed its energy use, including the environmental impact of its fleet and employee commutes as of 2001. Then it started making changes: switching city lighting fixtures from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs; running much of the fleet on alternative fuels; even getting rid of vehicles that weren't really needed.
Romney declined to speak more specifically about the new figures until Mayor Rocky Anderson gets a chance to review them. However, speaking earlier today on Midday Metro, the mayor's environmental advisor said, "if we're not there, we're just a couple of points away."
