Mountain View Corridor Meetings Begin Today

(KCPW News) A series of public meetings begin today for input on the proposed Mountain View Corridor. U-DOT Deputy Director Carlos Braceras says the purpose is to discuss funding options for the west-side freeway.

"Tolling is clearly an option," says Braceras. "And our preliminary research indicates it's a good one."

Another funding alternative is to raise the gas tax, but Braceras says it would cost at least 50-cents a gallon more to fully-fund the state's existing transportation needs. At current pump prices hitting three dollars a gallon, a gas tax increase seems unpopular. If built as a toll road, Braceras says the Mountain View Corridor could be built beginning in the next two or three years. Otherwise, it would be at least 25 years before commuters in west Salt Lake County saw relief to growing congestion.
