New Fiber Optic Network Boosts U of U

(KCPW News) Research data at the University of Utah now travels at light-speed thanks to a brand new connection to the national fiber optic network known as LambdaRail. The U of U has spent $1.25 million to plug into the most prestigious research network in the country. It transfers data 10,000 times faster than the typical cable modem and is critical for researchers collaborating with colleagues around the world.

U of U Information Technology spokesman Stephen Hess says the University's connection to LambdaRail will ultimately free-up space so campus internet connections in offices, dorms and libraries will move more quickly. But before students take to downloading big music or porn files willy-nilly, Hess warns existing limits still apply to the amount of data students can download on the campus network. Fines are imposed for students who exceed the limit.

Furthermore, Hess says the fiber optic network will attract other research projects and businesses to Utah.
