Commuter Rail, TRAX on Agenda

(KCPW News) In an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon, the Utah Transit Authority Board of Trustees will pass a resolution urging Salt Lake County to put a $900 million bond on the November ballot for light rail projects.

UTA spokesman Justin Jones says with voter approval, the state could build TRAX spurs out to the airport, West Valley, West Jordan and down to Draper in seven years, rather than thirty. It's up to the Salt Lake County Council to approve the bond issue for November ballot. During Wednesday's meeting, the UTA Board will also authorize the state to receive an estimated $480 million federal grant for the commuter rail currently underway in Davis County.

TRAX is great for those who wish to save on gas and help the enviroment. It even helps alleviate parking and traffic congestion during special downtown events. What UTA still fails to address are the public transportaion needs of low wage workers who depend on the system for ALL of their transportaion needs, especially reaching employment sites.Until UTA runs public transportaion 24-7 so that all those without private vehicles can access all available employment opportunities they fail to serve those who need their services the most.
