Best Library in the Nation? SLC Takes the Prize
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) It's the Wheaties Box of book-lenders. The centerfold of the Dewey Decimal system. The Salt Lake Main Library will soon grace the cover of the most prestigious publication in the library world."This is a very big deal for us," says Library Director Nancy Tessman. "Library Journal is the premiere periodical in the library world."
Tessman says the Salt Lake Main Library was named 2006 Library of the Year for a combination of excellence in the basic library functions and a host of extras like film screenings, lectures and writing courses.
The Salt Lake Main Library will grace the cover of Library Journal and be honored at the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans later this month. Tessman says the library's emergence as a gathering place in Salt Lake City and a hub for community events and nonprofit agencies makes it unique in the country.
The distinction comes with a $10,000 prize, which the library will use, in part, to send staff and board members to the awards ceremony in New Orleans.
