Utah Dept. of Health Sets Up Special Fund
(KCPW News) The Utah Department of Health has set up an account to collect donations for low-income dental care. Governor Jon Huntsman Junior announced last week he will solicit private gifts to pay for the services lawmakers refused to fund with state dollars. Department of Health Director David Sundwall says the fundraising arrangement is unusual."I've made clear to people at the health department, we're not soliciting funds," says Dr. Sundwall. "We'll facilitate their being spent if people choose to donate them, but we're not out beating the bushes for more money."
Dr. Sundwall maintains it's the legislature's duty to fund the services. In the absence of that approval, Governor Huntsman has appointed community advocate Pamela Atkinson to head the emergency fundraising effort. They must raise one million dollars before June 30th, or 65,000 low-income Utahns will be without basic care for their teeth.
People interested in contributing to the fund can send checks to the Utah Department of Health. The donation is tax deductible, but must be designated for Fiscal Year 2007 services.

I'm ashamed that the legislature of the state in which I live has determined that those less fortunate don't deserve to receive basic medical/dental care. I refuse to believe that the actions of the legislature reflect the desire of the people and I would encourage the good citizens of this state to show their displeasure in the next election. How simply disgraceful that we can be one of the most heavily taxed states in the US but deliver a lower level of care to our needy than most other states. We as residents should hang our heads low with shame that we have tolerated this! We are enjoying more prosperity than ever before and yet we would deny services to those in need. We've hit a new low in our excessiveness and our selfishness!
