Aims for Nationwide Discussion of "Virtue, Decency, Honor"

(KCPW News) Utah Senator Orrin Hatch is keeping up his effort to give the Stars and Stripes special protection in the U.S. Constitution. The Senate is expected to debate the amendment soon, despite criticism that there are more important things they should spend their time on. Hatch says there's nothing more important than protecting the flag and hopes the debate will spark a "nationwide discussion of virtue, decency and honor."

The Senate is said to be just a vote or two shy of passing the Constitutional Amendment. Critics say flag desecration is a nonexistent problem unworthy of such a drastic move as altering the U.S. Constitution. Hatch argues his amendment only returns to Congress the power to protect the flag and limits the power of so-called "activist judges." The need to reign-in so-called "activist judges" is a familiar refrain of Senator Hatch.

Utah Senator Bob Bennett says he will not support the amendment, preferring instead to try handling the problem without touching the Constitution.

Today is Flag Day, commemorating the June 14th, 1777 adoption of the U.S. Flag.
